Dr. Ilhan Chang

Dr. Ilhan Chang is an Associate Professor at the Department of Civil Systems Engineering, Ajou University (www.ajou.ac.kr) in the Republic of Korea since September 2020. Prior to Ajou University, Dr. Chang gained academic careers as a Lecturer (April 2017~June 2018) and Senior Lecturer (July 2018~August 2020) in geotechnical engineering at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). Dr. Chang has comprehensive expertise in geotechnical engineering, multi-disciplinary studies, and industrial cooperation and commercialization. Prior to his academic career, Dr. Chang gained his professional experience as a Senior Researcher at Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT) - the only government funded research institute for Civil Engineering, in Korea. Currently, Dr. Chang is leading the E3 Geotechnical Engineering Research Group (E3GEO) at Ajou University.

Dr. Chang earned his Bachelor of Science (2000), Master of Engineering (2004), and Doctor of Philosophy (2010) degrees in Civil and Geotechnical Engineering at KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology). Main topics of his M.S. and Ph.D. dissertations were "Soft Soil Evaluation using Elastic Waves" and "Soil Stabilization using Microbial Biopolymers", respectively.

Dr. Chang started his research career as a Research Assistant Professor at KAIST (2010~2011) and moved to KICT (2012~2017) as a Senior Researcher to expand his experiences in R&D management and practical implementation, prior to his appointment to UNSW.

Dr. Chang and his research group (E3GEO) are mainly interested in Soil Characterization, Ground Improvement, and Multi-disciplinary Convergence such as, Micro mechanics, Geophysical site characterization, DCM (Deep Cement Mixing), Erosion and soil preservation, and Bio-soils. Currently, Dr. Chang and E3GEO are expanding efforts to to address Geoenvironmental and Sustainability issues such as Environmentally-friendly soil improvement, Anti-desertification, Bio-soil applications (levees, slope, excavation, adobe structures), as well as Emerging geotechnical issues as Lunar soil studies and Planetary terramechanics.

We are waiting for sincere and passionate members to share our future dream.
